Regional bird expert to speak at Indiana Dunes SP

Visitors to Indiana Dunes State Park on April 6 can hear author Joel Greenberg speak about birds in a special event that will also honor Ken Brock, northwest Indiana’s iconic birder.

The event starts at 2 p.m. at the nature center and is sponsored by Shirley Heinze Land Trust.

Greenberg, an authority on the natural history of the Chicago area, will speak about his recently published book, “A Feathered River Across the Sky: The Passenger Pigeon’s Flight to Extinction.” The book, which has received national acclaim, chronicles the decline of the passenger pigeon from billions in number to none in 50 years. This year marks the centennial of the bird’s extinction. The book will be available for purchase and signing. Greenberg’s presentation is titled “Hope is the Thing With Feathers: The Passenger Pigeon, Kirtland’s Warbler, and Whooping Crane.”  Read more
