Suspect arrested for many tree stand thefts

Indiana Conservation Officers arrested Edward B. Jones, 44, West Harrison, Jan. 13 for the theft of tree stands, among several hunting and probation violations.

Jones was incarcerated at the Dearborn County Jail, Lawrenceburg, on these charges: theft, a Class A misdemeanor; failure to procure a hunting license, hunting with an illegal device and hunting without consent of the landowner, Class C misdemeanors, said Officer Joshua Thomas of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources Law Enforcement Division.

Officers are still investigating thefts of multiple tree stands in Dearborn County that were recovered as a result of a search warrant that was executed at Jones’ residence Dec. 8, 2014. Also recovered were one ground blind; and two Remington .308-caliber rifles, which were in violation of Jones’ probation.

Six of the 13 stolen tree stands have been appropriately identified and returned to their respective owners and subsequent charges have been filed. Every recovered tree stand so far was taken within a half mile of Jones’ residence, particularly near Jamison Creek Road and Davison Road. Tree stand types include ladder, lock-on and climbing. No double or “buddy” stands were recovered.

Officers still need help in identifying the remaining seven stands. District 9 officers encourage citizens to contact Officer Andrew Cline at acline@dnr.in.gov if they have had a tree stand stolen in that area.

Thomas added, “Indiana Conservation Officers highly encourage you to document all tree stands and any other gear of value in the following ways: Create a unique number and stamp it somewhere on a permanent part of the item along with your name, address and a phone number; photograph the item and place it in a safe location; document the brand name and the price paid for the item.

Citizens are also urged to contact 800-TIPIDNR or ICO Central Dispatch at 812-873-9536 to report any violations or suspicious activity.
